IELTS Writing Task 1: Describing Tables — Tips & Band 8 Sample
Tables are often considered the most challenging visual type in IELTS Writing Task 1. Unlike graphs and charts that present data visually, tables confront you with raw numbers arranged in rows and columns. Without the visual cues of a rising line or a dominant bar, you must identify patterns, group data, and create a coherent description entirely from numerical information.

Why Tables Are Difficult — And How to Overcome That
The main challenge with tables is data overload. A typical table might contain 20-30 individual figures, and many candidates make the mistake of trying to describe all of them. This leads to long, incoherent lists of numbers that score poorly on every assessment criterion.
The solution is selective reporting. You need to choose the most significant data and ignore the rest.
What to Look For in a Table
Spend your first 2-3 minutes analysing the table. Look for:
- The highest and lowest values — in each row and column
- Notable differences — Where is the biggest gap between figures?
- Similarities — Are any figures surprisingly close?
- Trends over time — If the table includes multiple years, which categories changed the most?
- Exceptions to general patterns — Does one category behave differently from the rest?
- Totals or averages — If provided, these can anchor your description
Planning Your Groupings
Once you have identified the key features, decide how to group them. Common grouping strategies for tables:
- By row — If rows represent countries/categories, compare groups of rows
- By column — If columns represent time periods, compare across time
- By magnitude — Group the largest figures together, then the smallest
- By pattern — Group categories that show similar patterns together
Writing the Introduction
As always, paraphrase the task prompt. Tables often provide a lot of information in the title, so there is plenty to work with.
Original: "The table below shows the percentage of adults who participated in four types of physical activity in five Australian cities in 2019."
Paraphrased: "The table compares adult participation rates in four physical activities across five cities in Australia during 2019."
Writing the Overview
For tables, the overview should identify:
- The overall highest and lowest figures (which category or row/column dominates)
- The most striking comparison or contrast
- Any general pattern that applies across the data
Example: "Overall, swimming was the most popular activity in all five cities, while cycling had the lowest participation rates. Sydney and Melbourne showed notably higher activity levels across all categories compared to the other three cities."

Paragraph Organization
For a table with five cities and four activities, you might organize as follows:
Option A: By activity
- Paragraph 1: Swimming and running (the two most popular)
- Paragraph 2: Gym membership and cycling (the two least popular)
Option B: By city
- Paragraph 1: Sydney and Melbourne (highest participation)
- Paragraph 2: Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide (lower participation)
Option C: By scale
- Paragraph 1: The largest figures and where they appear
- Paragraph 2: The smallest figures and notable exceptions
Choose whichever option creates the clearest, most logical flow for the specific data you are describing.
Data Selection Within Paragraphs
For each paragraph, select:
- 1-2 specific high/low values
- 1-2 comparisons between related figures
- 1 notable exception or interesting detail

- "Participation rates ranged from a low of 8% in Adelaide to a high of 54% in Sydney."
- "Across all cities, the figures fell within a relatively narrow band of 30-38%."
Referencing Multiple Data Points Efficiently
- "In all five cities, swimming attracted the highest participation."
- "With the exception of Perth, every city recorded figures above 40% for running."
- "The remaining three cities showed broadly similar patterns."

Task: The table below shows the average monthly spending (in dollars) on four categories by households in three income groups in 2022.

Introduction: The table presents average monthly household expenditure across four categories for three income brackets in 2022.
Overview: Overall, spending in every category increased substantially with income level, although the gap between income groups was far more pronounced in some categories than others. Housing represented the largest expense for all three groups, while entertainment consistently accounted for the smallest share.
Body Paragraph 1: Housing dominated household budgets across all income levels. Low-income households spent an average of $850 per month on housing, while middle-income households allocated $1,400, representing a 65% increase. High-income households, however, spent $3,200 — nearly four times the low-income figure and more than double the middle-income amount. Food was the second-largest category for all groups, with figures of $420, $580, and $890 for low, middle, and high income respectively. Notably, the gap in food spending between income groups was relatively modest compared to other categories.
Body Paragraph 2: Transport costs showed a clear escalation across income levels, rising from $180 for low-income households to $350 for middle-income and $720 for high-income families. The most dramatic disparity, however, was evident in entertainment spending. Low-income households spent a mere $60 monthly on entertainment, whereas high-income households allocated $650 — more than ten times as much. Middle-income households fell between these extremes at $210, but much closer to the lower end of the scale.
This response earns a Band 8 because it:
- Selects key data rather than listing every number
- Makes meaningful comparisons (ratios, multiples, percentage differences)
- Groups data logically by spending category
- Identifies the most significant pattern (entertainment disparity) as a highlight

What if the table has too much data to describe in 150-190 words?
Focus on the extremes (highest and lowest), the biggest differences, and one or two interesting exceptions. You are not expected to describe every cell in the table. The examiner rewards your ability to select and organise data, not your ability to list it all.
Should I calculate percentages or ratios from the raw data?
Yes, calculating simple ratios or proportional comparisons shows analytical ability and impresses examiners. Phrases like "nearly three times higher" or "roughly double" demonstrate that you are interpreting the data, not just reporting it.
How do I handle a table that shows changes over time?
Treat it similarly to a dynamic bar chart. Use trend language (increased, decreased, remained stable) and compare the figures across time periods. Your overview should identify which categories changed the most and which were the most stable.
Can I use abbreviations like "%" and "$" in my Task 1 response?
Yes. Standard symbols and abbreviations for units and currencies are perfectly acceptable and expected. Writing "45 percent" instead of "45%" is not wrong, but using the symbol is more efficient and natural in data-driven writing.
